Was Your Home Destroyed in the Tornado? A Texas Insurance Claim Attorney Gives You 3 Tips

April 3, 2012 was a disastrous day across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with two major twisters touching down and causing serious damage to hundreds of homes in the area. Other parts of Texas also saw damage after other tornadoes ripped through cities like Lancaster, Arlington, and other parts of Northern Texas.

The storm brought winds up to 150 miles per hour in some places, as the National Weather Service in Fort Worth rated the tornado up to an EF-3.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone, there were over 600 homes and structures damaged by the violent winds, with 50 percent of them suffering severe damage to the point of being destroyed. In fact, reports estimate that over 200 homes were completely destroyed due to the tornado.

When homes are destroyed and personal belongings are strung everywhere or are missing because of the destruction a tornado left, homeowners often have difficulties working with their insurance companies. When a policyholder has trouble providing documentation about the missing items and about what was damaged, insurers often capitalize on this and underpay claims. Sometimes, insurance companies participate in bad faith practices and deny claims altogether, stating that there was insufficient proof or that there was pre-existing damage.

When this happens, and you know your residential insurance claim is legitimate following this Texas tornado, you need to do the following three things:

  1. Document everything – take pictures of the damage.
  2. Re-read your insurance policy to make sure you understand your coverage.
  3. Talk with a skilled Texas insurance claim attorney to find out about your rights.

You can reach the Voss Law Firm today at 866-276-6179 for a free consultation and get your questions answered about your tornado damage claim.
