Water Damage From Hurricane Irene – Should You File a Claim?
8/31/2011If you are like many victims of Hurricane Irene, your home or business may be flooded, making it seem like your whole life is under water.
And the stress just increases if you look at your insurance policy only to discover that it might as well be written in another language since it is so hard to understand, and you cannot figure out if the policy covers water damage.
Water damage claims can be tricky.Water damage is not only very expensive to repair, it can also be harmful to you and your family's health if not properly taken care of. Bacteria can quickly spread in standing water, and spark the growth of mold in the home after the water recedes.
But insurance companies can be very tricky to deal with when it comes to water damage. Some policies state that the company will only cover water damage if it is caused by something outside of the home, like a storm, but not by a rising river. Others decline claims based on whether or not your home is on a flood plain. Some insurance companies try to make the claim that you did not properly keep up your home, which contributed to the water damage.
How you can help your water damage claim. The best step that you can take is to file the claim and provide the insurance company with all of the information necessary to conduct a complete investigation. You will probably need to supply photos, videos, and an inventory of what was damaged, at the very minimum. And remember that as a customer of your insurance company, you are entitled to an investigation, and to be treated fairly during the process.
